“I don’t want to play volleyball anymore.”

Holly Page’s heart sank when her daughter spoke those words. Lindsay’s high school team had recently made it to the state championship tournament. Lindsay was a junior, and her role was to come off the bench as a server and defensive specialist. Her mother, though not the coach, was already planning the next year’s starting rotation in her mind.

In college, Holly majored in PE and played basketball. For the past twenty-seven years she has been involved in teaching PE or coaching at some level. Her background and love for athletics is what made Lindsay’s decision to quit volleyball such a bombshell. Forced to examine her own attitudes toward girls in sports, Holly found she could no longer justify her earlier passions. God used this to start an evaluation process that resulted in this book.

Reflecting upon her own experiences as an athlete, coach, and mother, Holly explores questions that are relevant for many others. What are the benefits of playing sports? When is it okay, or even important, for a girl to quit participating in a sport? Do girls play sports for different reasons than boys? What potential pitfalls will parents face? What are some helpful things to know in dealing with school athletics? How can a parent communicate effectively with a coach? How should coaches approach their role?

Regal has just released an awesome book entitled Paperdoll by Natalie Lloyd. The pages within this book touched realms of my heart where only hope and inspiration dwell. One particular chapter in her book resounded in the recesses of my soul, the chapter is Beautiful Scars. It was as though I were reading a chapter from the life of my own child – in that moment I knew that the heavens were at work. I also knew that we were destined to cross paths.

Natalie is a beautiful person inside and out and this shows up through the prose that she pens. She has stories that are as vibrant as the sun and as refreshing as the dew on a Spring morning. This is one book that I would recommend to not only my readers but to my friends.

Natalie Lloyd is a former columnist for Christian teen girls magazine Brio. She has a special heart for teens and it shine through in her new book.

Some would say more sci-fi than mystery, and yet the ominous sense of intrigue is a page turner.

There are readers that skip over the prologue, however, Liparulo’s tantalizing tale begins from the first page and the prologue’s last line is a definite page turner: “The door closed, separating her from her family forever.”

To move from that phrase to the tale of an ordinary relocation of a family, could be a letdown. Not so, Liparulo allows the reader to relax before stirring the imagination with “Big Foot” and a haunted house.

There are good qualities to this book: Pre-teen to YA will enjoy the story from the move through the haunted house; Liparulo uses all the senses to portray the scenes—and he succeeds in scaring the reader at times; the author gives a definite sense this is a decent family, they respect each other and work together; although not overly religious, good moral values are portrayed and church is mentioned. I liked the idea of a reader’s guide, also.

I realize the author and publisher set the reader up to buy book two, but in this case I felt cheated. If I were buying the book, I’d want more resolution. I still enjoyed the read from cover to cover.
